The game of Blackjack
The object of the game is simple, get closer to twenty-one than the dealer, without going over twenty-one. The dealer will deal two cards, usually face up, but on some tables, could be face down, to every player and then him or herself last. The dealer also gets two cards, one face-up, which is called the “upcard” and one face-down, which is called the “hole card”.
The cards are valued as follows; two’s, three’s, four’s, five’s, six’s, seven’s, eight’s, nine’s, and ten’s are worth face value, jack’s, queen’s, and kings are worth ten and Aces are worth one or eleven. If you are dealt an Ace and any ten-valued card, that is called a “Blackjack” or a “Natural”. In most cases, at most casinos, a “Blackjack” or a “Natural” will pay three to two, or time and a half, as opposed to a normal win, which pays one to one, or even odds. If the dealer gets a “Blackjack” or a “Natural” all hands on the table will lose to the house, except for the players that also have a “Blackjack” or a “Natural” in which case it would then be a “push” or a tie.
Each hand comes and goes rather quickly, some nickname the game of live Blackjack as the “crack of all gambling” because of its speed and ability to win a lot fast, or lose a lot fast. You post a wager, the dealer deals you two cards, you “hit”, which is to take additional cards, or you “stay” or “stand” which is to take no additional cards, the dealer then reveals his or her hole card, hits up to and including sixteens, and then the hand is over. The dealer will then pay each player that is closer to twenty one than the house, takes the money from the players that are further away from twenty-one than the house and if the dealer had exceeded twenty-one, which is called “dealer breaks” then all of the players with cards in front of them get paid.
