Casinos have always been a very popular and exciting form of entertainment. It used to be the case that only the rich and famous visited casinos. But since casinos came on line – and most people now have access to the world wide web – the history of online casinos has changed gambling and gaming so as to ensure easy access for the whole world, if they want. And it seems like they do indeed want!
It is probably the case that the history of online casino began somewhere in the mid 1990s when in 1994 the Free Trade and Processing Zone Act was passed giving online casinos a license to practice and get business with gambling through the web. In the same year, the company Microgaming (which today still probably remains the most popular software for web based games) was established. The following year in 1995 CryptoLogic was founded. CryptoLogic set out to develop software packages with the capacity to securely and effectively process transactions, which was a huge step in the history of online casinos because one issue individual gamblers had with online gaming was transferring monies over the net in a secure and safe environment.
One of the other issues people had with on line gaming in the history of online casinos was lack of realistic gaming through the Internet. How, they wondered, could playing the slot machines be anything like playing those great machines at a real life casino? Well, that was exactly what Microgaming was determined to set out to do and indeed it probably did succeed at doing just that. The more Microgaming developed (and is still developing) its software since the 1990s, the more realistic and exciting on line gaming of all types has become, hence notching the history of online casinos up a grade or two for all gamblers to enjoy. If a player has to compromise with on line gaming in any way at all, that will put him or her off and he or she will seek gaming pleasure elsewhere. The creators at Microgaming understood and responded to that challenge and to this day, in 2007 keep on responding with better, faster and more furious technology for their great software.
In 2000, UK’s Gambling Review Report encouraged the legalization of all forms of online gambling and by 2002 online gambling expenditure reached a staggering $4.5billion! eCOGRA (eCommerce and Online Gambling Regulation and Assurance) was established for developing top online gambling standards to protect the customer in 2003 which was a huge step in the history of online casinos and is still essential to gamblers today. But there was bad news in 2006 when the Senate passed the Internet Gambling Enforcement Act which banned US financial institutions from processing any transaction with an online gambling operator. So as can be seen from this brief summary of the history of online casinos, there has been a lot of change and development over the years and this will probably continue in the years to come.
